John Vianney and the Volcano

Sketch Volcano: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Volcano was a lot of fun to draw, but after a long time of drawing it became apparent that I wasn't going to be spending so much time coloring.

Vianney happened to be the picture sitting in front of me when I was looking about for something to draw on the back of Volcano's index card. The effect of lines on the right side of his body and face is supposed to remind you of a confessional; however it is not perfect if you consider where the lighting would come from.

The colored version of Volcano is something of a carnival. I was trying to successfully communicate the following: smoke, soot, ashes, fire, earth, water, etc...However the effect is a bit confusing and strange. Thankfully the digital version makes up for this.

Vianny in color is more or less enjoyable to look at. There isn't much detailing in this photo of the background except in the wood behind him.

The digital version of Volcano looks more like what you'd expect a volcano's eruption to look like! The effects used were tritone, vintage, brush work for the sun and the sky, vignette, and other. It was enjoyable to work on.

Vianney has a picture paint color effect that gives you the impression that there is a little light coming from the next stall in the confessional however the main light comes from the door in front of him which has been opened.
