Morning and Twilight

Sketch Peaks and Valleys: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
This particular picture was a bit of a stretch for me. I wanted to do something interesting, but I wasn't sure what. So I started drawing and it ended up as a picture where morning and twilight occur simultaneously on the same picture. Flip it one way and you get morning, the other way and you get twilight.

Handling the Baby

Sketch Handling the Baby: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
This picture was something else to draw. The kid looks a little bit surprised to see whatever it is that she is looking at.
Colored Handling the Baby: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Lots of color, however I was trying to shade the picture and I realized that I couldn't shade the picture after the colors were already on it.
DigitalHandling the Baby: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Lots of glow and vibrant effect. Probably not the best picture of the three.

Labyrinth of the Mind

Sketch Labyrinth of the Mind: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
The eye in the center is trapped in a maze of stairs and platforms and other images that consume the mind.

Colored Labyrinth of the Mind: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Color adds some zest to it. What does zest even mean? Apparently it gives flavor to the original so that there is an enjoyable element to it.

Digital Labyrinth of the Mind: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Digital version darkens the whole thing so that it appears to be more intricate and looks as if it were an engraving.

Tell me about it Sweetheart

Sketch Tell me about it Sweetheart: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
I've been told that I should probably start working on shading technique. The pen doesn't make a good shade, however I've never wanted to transfer between my pen and pencil. I've always wanted to keep going. This particular picture doesn't look as good as it could were it given a proper shading with pencil, however it still makes a good start for practice.
Colored Tell me about it Sweetheart: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
The colors seem to mesh well together. I am constantly reminded that I would benefit from memorizing the colors that I use in these pictures. Perhaps that's what I"ll start to do in the future.
Digital Tell me about it Sweetheart: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
The digital version doesn't do much.

Good Friends

Sketch Good Friends: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
This is probably one of the most enjoyable pictures I ever got to draw. I was able to draw some Celtic circles into the background of the seat on which the girls are sitting, and the shading came out nicely compared to some of my botched attempts to shade in people.
Colored Good Friends: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Voila. Not much else to be said here.
Digital Good Friends: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
This was a last minute decision. I gave them a pencil effect and then overcast the whole thing with an orange grunge effect and a small frame.

Boy at the top of the Stairs

Sketch Boy at the top of the Stairs: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
This drawing was one of many write offs that I drew in order to pass the time and to practice.
Colored Boy at the top of the Stairs: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
The colors make it much more interesting and give it some depth of feeling, as if you know what this kid is going to do in order to get his ball, and are just a little bit nervous about his attempting the task.
Digital Boy at the top of the Stairs: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette

The digital rendition gives depth and shadows to the picture. Giving us the focus of the boy on the stairs directly on the ball, and giving the walls some color.

Woman on the Phone

Sketch Woman: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
In reality the model for this picture was holding her hand up so as to prevent me from taking the photo. However it now looks as if she is receiving some bad news over the phone.
Colored Woman: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Notice the fun pattern of flowers on the wall that are creeping up and through the fence pattern?
Digital Woman: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Apparently this photo takes well to a purple hue. Moreover I gave it a touch up with colored pencil sketch effects.

Coffee in the Morning

Digital Coffee: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Colored Coffee: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
The digital version of Coffee has a vintage effect. Needless to say I think that I managed to get the look of exhaustion in the morning down. However the overly emphasized lining along the left corner of the mouse makes it look like Joker came in and took a knife to her!
Sketch Coffee: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
What I like about the Sketch all alone is that it makes me think of Mrs. Frizzle from Magic School-buss.

Boy at Computer

Sketch Boy at Computer: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
The model of this picture was sitting opposite me when I was drawing during a period of time when I was drawing a blank for what to draw. This was enjoyable to say the least.
Colored Boy at Computer: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Everyone needs just a little bit of distraction. This kid is enjoying youtube on the computer amidst a number of things that clutter the table.
Digital Boy at Computer: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
I really enjoy the background when all the effects are in place. They help them to pop out.

Girl and Boy who happen to be Friends

Sketch Girl and a Boy who happen to be Friends: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
The sketch didn't end the way I expected it. The characters are somewhat younger than the ones that I modeled off of, however they turned out to be just fine.
Color Girl and a Boy who happen to be Friends: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Perhaps it was the haste with which this picture was colored and sketched. The background is quite enjoyably colorful, however it is somewhat sharp with too much contrast and not enough blending.
Digital Girl and a Boy who happen to be Friends: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Thankfully the digital effect gave a nice blending effect that covers up the severe lines in the original colors.

Inspiration

Sketch Inspiration: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Maybe it was a day lacking inspiration and I felt that I needed some. The word inspiration is etched into the design of this drawing with INSPIR on the top and ATION on the bottom.
Colored Inspiration: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Probably the most enjoyable aspect of this picture for me is the steps leading down to the door in the bottom left hand corner. The pane of glass makes the bridge for the letter A.
Digital Inspiration: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
The green vortex appears to be much more interesting when the digital effects have enhanced the colors.

Church a la Colour

Sketch Church a la Colour: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
This picture, though sketched out quickly and not entirely faithful to the dimensions of the scene, is full of potential.
Color Church a la Colour: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Coloration for this picture was enjoyable. Lots of oranges and reds on the walls, the floors covered with blues and greens.
Digital Church a la Colour: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
The final digital effect might be a bit too red and two green, but it does give a dark effect so that the faces pop.

Afraid of the Babysitter

Sketch Afraid of the Babysitter: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
The fun part about this sketch was that I was able to sketch in the floor patterns so that they would blend in nicely later on. As you can see in the colored version it has a nice effect that sort of draws your eye. Sadly the camera has picked up a little to much of the light and not enough of the color
Colored Afraid of the Babysitter: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Digital Afraid of the Babysitter: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette

Fortunately the color is restored in the digital version and a sunlight effect can be seen through the door casting light on the shadow of the babysitter.

Boy in Pool

Sketch Boy in Pool: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
Colored Boy in Pool: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette

I started this picture with the idea that I was going to create some punk skater. However it seems to resonate more with the over baggy hoody and jeans style with which I was very familiar several years ago.

The colored version of this is was enjoyable since I outlined the bottom of the pool and the rest of the picture with pen so that the stark contrast could be seen.

Digital Boy in Pool: May 2013: (c) Luke Bennette
The digital picture gives it a realistic feel, as if overcast were occurring while other patches experience bright sunshine.
